A Modern Farmhouse Kitchen Made for Family Life

A warm and practical renovation for a family living in a regional area, combining timber, colour and repurposed cabinetry to create a kitchen that feels welcoming, hard-working and ready for every gathering.

Location Regional family home
Style Warm modern farmhouse
Focus Kitchen, entertaining and family connection

The Project

A Kitchen That Better Suits the Home and the Family

The existing kitchen was functional, but its pale cabinetry and dark benchtops did not reflect the character of the regional home or the relaxed way this family likes to live.

The goal was to create a more grounded and inviting kitchen without discarding everything that was already there. Existing cabinet doors were thoughtfully repurposed and given a rich new colour, while warm timber benchtops, brass hardware and ceiling-height tiles introduced texture and lasting character.

Designed to bring everyone together—whether it is a busy weekday breakfast, a relaxed weekend lunch or a house full of family and friends.

Kitchen Before and After

From Cool and Conventional to Warm and Full of Character

The layout already supported everyday family life, so the renovation focused on changing the atmosphere of the room—using colour, natural timber and stronger detailing to make the kitchen feel more at home in its setting.

Before Kitchen before renovation with pale cabinetry and dark benchtops
The original kitchen had a useful footprint and generous island, but the finishes felt cool and disconnected from the home’s relaxed regional character.
After Kitchen after renovation with timber benchtops, dark cabinetry, brass hardware and tiled splashback
Timber surfaces, deep painted cabinetry, traditional brass pulls and white tiles create a warmer, more confident kitchen with a modern farmhouse feel.

The Design Direction

Rustic Warmth With a Clean, Modern Finish

Each selection was chosen to feel comfortable and familiar rather than overly polished. The final palette balances strong colour with natural materials and simple, timeless details.

01

Repurposed Cabinetry

Existing doors were reused and refreshed with a deep colour, reducing waste while giving the kitchen a completely new personality.

02

Warm Timber Benchtops

Natural timber brings warmth to the large work surfaces and gives the family-sized island a relaxed, furniture-like quality.

03

Tiles to the Ceiling

White subway tiles extend to the ceiling, making the cooking wall feel taller, brighter and more deliberately finished.

04

Traditional Brass Detail

Cup pulls, knobs and warm metallic accents add an understated farmhouse reference and soften the darker cabinetry.

05

Family-Friendly Function

The generous island remains central to cooking, casual meals, homework, conversation and everyday family activity.

06

Made for Entertaining

Clear work zones and a welcoming central bench allow the cook to stay connected with guests during gatherings.

A More Considered Finish

Keeping What Worked and Transforming What Did Not

A successful renovation does not always require starting again. By retaining the useful layout and repurposing existing doors, the project could focus its investment on the finishes that would make the greatest visual and practical difference.

  • Existing cabinet doors reused and refinished
  • New timber benchtops across the kitchen and island
  • Dark cabinetry balanced by crisp white tiling
  • Brass handles and tapware for warmth and character
  • A generous island for preparation, meals and conversation

The Finished Kitchen

A Welcoming Centre for Everyday Life and Family Gatherings

The completed kitchen feels warmer, more personal and more appropriate for its regional setting. Dark cabinetry anchors the open room, timber introduces a natural softness, and the white tiled wall keeps the overall result fresh and contemporary.

Most importantly, it is a kitchen that invites people to stay. The island offers space to prepare food, pull up a stool, share a drink and remain part of the conversation—making the room as suited to large family occasions as it is to everyday life.
